Amazon in-kind contribution to UN migration agency helps over 35,000 vulnerable people in Romania

Bucharest, Romania – 17 June 2024 – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Romania has successfully concluded the distribution of nearly 100,000 essential items generously donated by Amazon, the world’s largest online retailer.

This significant humanitarian effort, beginning with the delivery of the items in mid-October 2023, has reached over 35,000 individuals across Romania, including over 25,000 Ukrainian refugees, more than 500 other third-country nationals, and over 8,500 vulnerable Romanian people, such as Roma and people experiencing homelessness.

Amazon’s generous donation specifically consisted of 97,173 assorted items of clothing and 2,190 packs of soap, where each pack had 3 soap bars. As of 31 May 2024, all these items were successfully distributed to people in need all across Romania by IOM Romania and our partners countrywide.

The distribution of these vital goods has been carried out in collaboration with several key stakeholders, ensuring swift and efficient delivery to those in need. In particular, the Directorate General for Social Assistance in Bucharest (DGASMB), played a crucial role in carefully packing the boxes and distributing at RomExpo in Bucharest, while the Department for Emergency Situations (DSU) and Inspectorate General for Emergency Situation (IGSU), both part of the Romanian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI), helped to facilitate the transportation of much of the goods to counties across Romania. The continuous support from our dedicated partners has been instrumental in ensuring that these essential items reached those most in need.

“Amazon’s extraordinary generosity, together with the unwavering support of our partners, have enabled us to touch the lives of thousands of vulnerable individuals, and for that we are extremely grateful”, said Mircea Mocanu, Head of IOM Romania. Adding, “This aid represents hope, dignity, and the affirmation that these people are not forgotten. With the help of our friends and partners, this activity has had a profound impact on the well-being of the recipients, helping them to rebuild their lives with dignity.”

On behalf of Amazon, Anna Derinova-Hartmann, Corporate Citizenship Program Manager at Amazon, stated, “We are thrilled to express our profound gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate on the donation initiatives in Romania. This project has been a uniquely enriching experience for us. It has not only taught us invaluable lessons but has also significantly strengthened the bonds between our organisations. We look forward to continuing our work together, building on the solid foundation we have established through this partnership.”

Good quality clothing and basic hygiene supplies are not just physical necessities, but they are essential for maintaining human dignity, fostering a sense of normalcy, and providing comfort during challenging times. IOM Romania remains committed to supporting displaced individuals and vulnerable communities, continuing its mission to provide humanitarian assistance and promote the well-being of all.

IOM Romania looks forward to working with Amazon again for future collaborative humanitarian activities.
